Summer activity: Kayak for a green cause and it is free! families
Green Kayak
GreenKayak is an environmental organization that allows individuals to make a direct impact on
the cleanliness of their local water bodies. This organization, started in Copenhagen in 2017
and now available in Stockholm, Sweden, provides free kayak rentals to people willing to pick up
litter from the water during their trip. In this way, GreenKayak engages the local community in
environmental activism, transforming the act of kayaking into a sustainable, eco-friendly
practice. In 2020, Green Kayak became a UNESCO Green Citizen project. A total of 17868 kg of
trash have been collected that year only with the help of 12047 volunteers.
Their unique initiative not only promotes physical activity and outdoor recreation but also
instills a deep sense of responsibility for the environment among participants. The collected
litter is documented and categorized, providing valuable data about pollution levels and types,
which can further inform future environmental protection efforts. By combining leisure with an
opportunity to care for the environment, Green Kayak provides a unique model for community-led
environmental stewardship.
